The R&D Engineer (Frame Development) is responsible for creating new frame concepts, designing 3D frames, developing prototypes and samples, and conducting quality reviews. This role ensures frames are structurally sound, cost-effective, and manufacturable while supporting OEM/ODM sofa projects. The engineer will also contribute to R&D costing, material evaluation, and product construction improvement.
1. Frame Concept & Design:
- Create innovative frame design concepts that balance design intent, durability, and cost.
- Prepare detailed frame drawings using SolidWorks/AutoCAD, aligned with upholstery and CoverFit requirements.
- Explore new construction methods (e.g., blow-mold frame conversion, CNC nesting standardization).
2. Sample Development & Testing:
- Build and review prototype frames for new sofa designs.
- Conduct structural and dimensional checks on samples, ensuring compliance with design and comfort requirements.
- Document modifications and provide feedback to improve manufacturability.
3. Quality Review & Product Construction:
- Inspect frame samples for accuracy, durability, and compliance with Ashley standards.
- Collaborate with Upholstery Engineering and CoverFit teams to align frame with pattern/sewing requirements.
- Identify weaknesses in frame design and propose continuous improvement solutions.
4. Material & R&D Costing:
- Evaluate frame materials (MDF, plywood, hardwood, metal, blow-mold components).
- Support R&D costing by analyzing material and production methods for efficiency.
- Recommend cost reduction opportunities through design optimization.
5. Collaboration & Documentation:
- Work closely with Product Designers, Upholstery Engineers, and Sourcing teams.
- Maintain updated technical files, BOMs, and ECO documentation in PDM/ERP systems.
- Provide input to suppliers and vendors on frame requirements.
