Get to know the Role:
- Full responsibility and ownership of all databases that power the Grab Payments platform Identify and forecast and fix bottlenecks preventing accelerated growth or make mitigation plans.
- Evaluate new and emerging database related products and technologies and vendors in the OLTP and OLAP space which include but are not limited to SQL, NoSQL, TS, columnar DBs, MapReduce ecosystems and other technologies.
- Ensure database practices are compliant over and above Industry Standards including PCI DSS version 3.2.
- Work with development teams and analytic teams on database modelling and design from the moment a feature addition is planned. Participate in code reviews that include DB changes.
- Develop, review and improve processes for stable deployments of Application Code with Release Engineering and of database server software with SysOps.
- Develop and implement security policies and procedures that improve stability and prevent data loss.
- Setup process of DB monitoring, alerting, trending and graphing methods with the SysOps Team and regularly evaluate and improve it.
- Provide escalated support and participate in incidents where the responsible property is Database.
- Develop and deliver, documentation and training materials. Perform training about database design modelling as well as operational best practices across the company.
The day-to-day activities:
- As the Database Engineer, you will be responsible for monitoring day to day MySQL, PostgreSQL and or other OLTP database systems in terms of operations and management.
- Perform database capacity planning and maintenance, monitoring and performance tuning
- Diagnose any database issues and employ measures to prevent recurrence
- Work with engineering and operations team in building tooling to drive scalability, reliability and performance
- Research and develop new technologies and approaches for building highly available data persistence systems
- Advice and support product, engineering, support and operation teams
- Participate in on-call rotations
The must haves:
Relevant Experience
- 4+ years of experience with installation, management, upgrades, backup and restore of large MySQL, PostgreSQL and or other OLTP database system installations
- Experience benchmarking, clustering and tuning the databases for performance, reliability, high availability and scalability
- Familiar with a key-value or Distributed Data Store is plus.
- Good understanding/hands-on experience on Casandra/SycllaDB is plus.
- Experience with AWS RDS / Elasticache / other AWS Database Services or experience with management of databases in AWS environment will a strong plus
Requirements
- Preferably a degree in computer science, software engineering, information technology or related fields
- Deep understanding and real passion for relational database theory and database fundamentals
- Deep understanding of MySQL storage engines (understanding of PostgreSQL, Casandra, SycllaDB would be an added plus)
- Proficiency in shell scripting (bash, sed, awk et al) or Python to perform automation.
- Hands-on experience on Docker, Kubernetes, Jenkins & Ansibles is strong plus.
- Proficiency with Linux system administration
- Strong CS fundamentals (with competencies in algorithms and data structures)
